Job Summary:

The Warehouse Associate is responsible for operating forklift, pallet jack, and/or other material handling equipment as part of the distribution process within a fast paced warehouse setting. The Warehouse Operator will utilize equipment while performing tasks to include shipping, receiving, unloading, scanning, moving, staging, loading, locating, relocating, and stacking product.

Primary Duties:

  • Safely loads and securely stows freight into line haul (highway) trailers, city pick-up and delivery trucks, trailers or other vehicles; loading and stowing freight is performed in an effective manner to prevent equipment damage and cargo damage in-transit and/or during unloading, and to fully utilize the maximum cargo carrying capacity of the vehicle (i.e. maximizes load factor)
  • Safely unloads freight from line haul trailers, city pick-up and delivery trucks, trailers or other vehicles
  • Performs warehouse keeping and housekeeping duties within warehouse and terminal property
  • Conducts formal equipment inspections prior to use, aids in facility inspections
  • Reports to and works under the supervision of Warehouse Manager
  • Loads, unloads, moves, stacks and stages products and materials using a fork lift, reach truck or other power equipment.
  • Assists in maintaining the security of the warehouse by conducting operations in a manner which promotes safety
  • Performs picking duties in an efficient manner that meets both company and customer standards
  • Other duties as required and assigned by supervisor

Tasks:

  • Handles incoming and outgoing freight shipments in an effective manner to prevent equipment damage and cargo damage, and to prevent loss or overage of freight:
    • Ensures there is proper documentation for:
      • Bill of lading and company pro label stickers affixed to freight & paperwork
      • Company pro bill or interline carrier pro bill
      • Dangerous goods certificate and placard
    • Matches freight shipments to documentation and checks to make sure:
      • Piece count is accurate and as shown on documents
      • Physical nature of freight matches description on shipping documents
      • Name and address of shipper and consignee is marked on shipment (and/or labels affixed to freight), and is the same as shown on documents

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:

Physical:

  • Minimum age 18
  • Physical fitness, agility and free of illicit substances
  • Physically suited to the nature of the work, which includes sustaining repetitive motion and manual labor with periods of peak physical exertion, bending, lifting and carrying weights up to 70 pounds, twisting, turning, reaching overhead
  • Must pass company-paid medical examination and substance abuse screening prior to clearance for employment

Safety Equipment:
Must possess and wear at all times appropriate personal protective safety equipment including approved steel-toed boots or footwear, gloves, safety glasses, suitable work clothing which provides protection against normal hazards in an industrial workplace.

Shift Work:
Must be suited and willing to work shifts, including evenings and weekends.

Education/Experience:

  • High school education or GED (General Education Diploma) equivalency
  • Minimum 2 to 3 years' experience and/or training in trucking and warehouse environment
  • Previous experience operating warehouse equipment such as a forklift and reach trucks

Essential Skills:

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
  • Ability to follow safety regulations while operating equipment
  • Ability to regularly lift up to 70 pounds
  • Ability to learn proper operations of warehouse equipment

Environment:
While performing the duties of this job the employee will be required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms. This position may be required to stoop, kneel, or crouch as it relates to product handling and distribution, and must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. This position may occasionally lift more than 50 pounds. This position will be regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and can be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold including climates consistent with outside weather conditions.

Prior Experience:

  • For full-time positions: 2 - 3 years suitable industrial experience, preferably in trucking or warehousing
  • For part-time positions: prior industrial work experience

Working Conditions:

  • 75% or more medium duty work
  • 25% of time bending, climbing, balancing, and carrying
  • 25%-49% of time kneeling, crouching, reaching, and standing
  • 50%-74% of time handling
  • Spends approximately 75% or more of time indoors
  • Hazards - definite risk of bodily injury, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, etc.
  • Conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin, such as fumes or odors
